Dave Perkins is a great friend of ours and a real trend-setter when it comes to church media. He is creative, inspiring and has great experience in all things media-related. Dave works at Kings Church Manchester and also runs bibleonthewall.com, a unique online shop selling posters with bible verses on them, in a non-cheesy fashion! You can follow him on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Give us a brief history of how you got to where you are today?

Raised in Bristolia, I’m really a musician, but I got inspired by my Sister who is a real life designer. I did a load of design stuff for the Christian union when I was doing Music Tech at Huddersfield Uni. ‘Twas there that I chased down a beautiful woman and stayed up north in Manchester where after a year of freelance random live sound, video, music writing and design bits, King’s asked me to join the team here. I wasn’t earning much and didn’t like tax returns so that was a relief!

What does your role within church media consist of?

Generally I communicate vision, events and whatever to lots of people with pictures (both moving and still), words and the internet. I also oversee worship team business and make tea.

What tool, software or app could you not live without?

Photoshop, Indesign, sometimes like just running through pixelmator if I’ve got 2 seconds to colour a photo – the usual. Evernote… We also use asana to plan stuff and work together on. We’ve started using planning center for our worship admin, which is saving me a whole bunch of time.

Tell us about any side projects you have going on?

To be honest I’ve pretty much stopped all freelance / sidey projecty stuff as I just want to be present when I get home from a day at the office for the wife and my lil daughter. However, I am pushing myself to write songs for church though, and hopefully getting an EP of some of my more random stuff at some point.

How do you stay current and on top of design trends?

Meh. If what we do works, reaches the right people and makes sense then I’m happy. I guess the hope is that I don’t spend too much time worrying about it.

There’s a whole load of internet places that I get inspiration from though but tbh it’s more just following the right people on instagram, twitter and pinterest that feed me stuff.

What piece of advice would you give to other church media people?

Chill out.

What’s your favourite bible verse?

Colossians 1v15

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation…..

Send us the artiest photo you’ve taken?

No.

Tell us a joke.

I dreamt that I wrote Lord of the Rings last night. I was Tolkien in my sleep.
